為重要和常見的鐵礦石礦物。鈦磁鐵礦、釩鈦磁鐵礦同時亦為鈦、釩的重要礦石礦物。富含 Ti、V、Ni、Co等元素時可綜合利用。藥用磁鐵礦名磁石，別名玄石、慈石、靈磁石、吸鐵石、 吸針石。功效：潛陽安神；聰耳明目；納氣平喘。 磁不但在現(xiàn)代醫(yī)學上有著重要的應用，如核 磁共振成像技術，常稱磁共振CT(計算機化層析術)，以及心磁圖和腦磁圖的應用，而且還有著悠 久的歷史。在西漢的《史記》(約公元前90年)書中的“倉公傳”便講到齊王侍醫(yī)利用5種礦物藥( 稱為五石)治病。這5種礦物藥是指磁石(Fe3O4)、丹砂(HgS)、雄黃(As2O3)、礬石(硫酸鉀鋁)和 曾青(2cuCo3)。隨后歷代都有應用磁石治病的記載。例如，在東漢的《神農本草》(約公元2世紀 )藥書中便講到利用味道辛寒的慈(磁)石治療風濕、肢節(jié)痛、除熱和耳聾等疾病，南北朝陶弘景 著的《名醫(yī)別錄》(公元510年)醫(yī)藥書中講到磁石可以養(yǎng)腎臟，強骨氣，通關節(jié)，消痛腫等。唐 代著名醫(yī)藥學家孫思邈著的《千金方》(公元652年)藥書中還講到用磁石等制成的蜜丸，如經常 服用可以對眼力有益。北宋何希影著的《圣惠方》(公元1046年)醫(yī)藥書中又講到磁石可以醫(yī)治兒 童誤吞針的傷害，這就是把棗核大的磁石，磨光鉆孔穿上絲線后投入喉內，便可以把誤吞的針吸 出來。
